Congresswoman Adams Calls on Speaker Ryan to Bring Meaningful Gun Reform Legislation to the House Floor

June 24, 2016

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) applauds Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and the nearly 40 other Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, as well as Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA), for their leadership displayed in yesterday’s filibuster to seek a vote on gun-control legislation.

“As a staunch supporter of gun safety reform and the need for legislation to ban those on the terror watch list from purchasing firearms, the action taken by my colleagues in the senate was honorable. Gun control is not a partisan issue—it is a commonsense issue. We cannot be guided by politics; it is wrong and irresponsible to suggest that the rights of law abiding gun owners are being compromised by tightened policies that can save lives. More than 30,000 people die each year in gun deaths. It is unacceptable to see the lack of leadership in Congress to bring meaningful gun safety measures to the floor of the House and Senate. I applaud Senator Murphy. The nation cannot afford to lose one more life to a senseless act of violence, therefore I ask Speaker Ryan to do his job as the Republican leader of Congress and bring meaningful gun reform legislation to the House floor. The nation is overdue for a vote on this issue.”
