CONGRESSWOMAN ADAMS RESPONSE TO GOV. MCCRORY’S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OVER HB2

Charlotte, NC - Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) today released the following statement after Gov. McCrory filed a lawsuit against the federal government over HB2:

“Instead of doing what is right and necessary to protect the rights of all of North Carolina’s citizens, Governor McCrory has decided to sue the federal government and continue to take our state backwards. North Carolina should not be the test case in whether it is ok to discriminate against anyone. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has already ruled that federal civil rights laws protect transgender students from discrimination (G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board).

“It is clear that HB2 violates the Constitution and should be repealed. I implore Governor McCrory and the leaders of the North Carolina General Assembly to comply with the Department of Justice and do what is right for North Carolina and its citizens. We have seen the negative reactions from all segments of our community not to mention the economic impact. There have been estimates that North Carolina may have already lost over $100 million in projected revenue due to the law. This has been a black-eye in the history of our great State and we should not be on the wrong side of history.”
