Congresswoman Adams Supports Full Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act

January 12, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC— Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)." U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, gave a speech to commemorate the anniversary and called on Congress to fully reauthorize the legislation. Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) made the following statement regarding Secretary Duncan's call for full reauthorization:

"As a retired educator, I applaud Secretary Duncan's call to fully reauthorize ESEA. Education is a basic right that must be guaranteed to every child regardless of income, race, ethnicity or disability. In order to achieve this and to continue moving our nation forward we have to reshape our approach when it comes to educating our future leaders and we must be willing to take bold steps to protect our most vulnerable children. It is time to increase investments in education, empower teachers and do away with archaic laws such as No Child Left Behind. It is the responsibility of all of us to work together to ensure that all children have access to a quality education that will allow them to compete in the global workforce. Equality and justice for all is the hallmark of our great nation, inherent in that statement is equality in education and opportunity. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House to move forward on reauthorization of ESEA and I am committed to doing all I can to strengthen our education system for all children in the 12th district and children all across our great country."
