Congresswoman Adams Visits Pedro Salmeron at Stewart Detention Center

September 1, 2016

CHARLOTTE — On Wednesday, August 31, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) visited Pedro Salmeron at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia.

After her visit with Pedro Salmeron, Congresswoman Adams released the following statement:

“As a mother and as a former educator Pedro’s case is personal for me. No young person should be ripped away from their family and their community, and thrown into a broken immigration system. Today's visit gave me an opportunity to finally meet with Pedro and to see firsthand how he's being treated and is holding up while in detention. The effects that this ordeal has had on this young man are clear. That is why I am renewing my commitment to continuing to work with my colleagues to address our broken immigration system, and I will continue to monitor this case. I will keep Pedro and his entire family in my prayers,” said Rep. Adams.

Since February 2016 Congresswoman Adams has strongly advocated for the release of Pedro Salmeron, a 12th District youth detained by ICE agents earlier this year, who also became part of the “NC 6.” Rep. Adams has been in constant communication with the community about Pedro’s detention. Rep. Adams recently met with the family of Pedro, where she pledged her commitment to continue to advocate for Pedro’s release. And on March 31st, Reps. Adams, in a letter to the director of ICE, urged for the release of Pedro Salmeron while his appeal of asylum was being processed. On May 9th, Rep. Adams personally called ICE Director, Sarah Saldaña to request Pedro’s release.
