TUSKEGEE, Alabama - Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (D, NC-12), accepted the Booker T. Washington Award on behalf of Tuskegee University, yesterday, honoring her long years of public service on behalf of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The Award is named in honor of Booker T. Washington, a freed slave who spent years advocating for Black liberation and education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He became the first African-American to meet one-on-one with a president at the White House when President Teddy Roosevelt hosted him in 1905. Mr. Washington helped establish Tuskegee University, serving there until his death in 1915.

“Booker T. Washington’s signature role in establishing HBCUs created a crucial steppingstone for Black Americans wanting to build a better life for themselves and for all future generations, not just their own" said Rep. Adams. “His vision for Black education is the reason many of us, including myself, have a seat at the table today. I am deeply honored to be considered worthy of an award in his name, and I take it as validation and encouragement to carry on his mission in the U.S. Congress.”
