Rep. Adams’ Statement on the Passing of Yvonne Johnson

CHARLOTTE – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), released the following statement on the passing of former Greensboro Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem Yvonne Johnson:
“Greensboro has lost a giant.
“Like me, Yvonne Johnson lived by the old Shirley Chisholm quote, “Service is the rent we pay for living on God’s Earth.” She was more than the first Black Mayor of Greensboro. My friend led a life of change and justice-making, from the March on Washington to the Greensboro Sit-ins while she was a student at Bennet College, where I taught for forty years. She took my seat on the Greensboro City Council and led our city with grace and conviction. Her rent is fully paid and then some. Rest in peace, my friend.”
