Adams Reacts to Extension of Eviction Moratorium

August 3, 2021

"Our housing-insecure families need more time, and I am glad the Biden Administration heard their call"

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement in response to the extension of the CDC Eviction Moratorium:

"Our housing-insecure families need more time, and I am glad the Biden Administration heard their call," said Congresswoman Alma Adams. "The National Equity Atlas estimates 6.4 million households across the country are behind on rent. The Washington Post reports 1.2 million families face eviction in the next two months if we do not act. In my district, over 20,000 Mecklenburg County households that are behind on rent - the highest number of households in the state of North Carolina. I have fought for our families in the House and in Washington D.C. because I will not be responsible for America's next housing crisis, and I will continue to fight until the crisis is averted."

"Even though the President has rightfully extended the moratorium, I need your help. One of the reasons I've fought so hard to extend the moratorium is so more tenants seek the rental assistance they're entitled to and remain secure in their housing. Through RAMP CLT, Charlotte-Mecklenburg has been among the leaders in our state in distributing emergency rental assistance funds; however, in the first two days of August alone, almost 700 new families have applied for assistance. Extending the eviction moratorium will allow critical rental assistance funds to reach tenants and landlord alike. When tenants utilize these federal programs, they also have a chance to pay back their landlords who are struggling to make ends meet and facing foreclosure on their properties. During the month of August, my office will be doing everything necessary to keep Charlotte and Mecklenburg County families in their homes. If you're one of my constituents facing eviction, please visit my website at adams.house.gov to learn more about the help that is out there, give us a call at 704-344-9950 so we can connect you with resources, or visit RampCLT.com to be directly connected with housing assistance," Adams concluded.
