Cox Mill graduate appointed to military academy

CONCORD- A graduate of Cox Mill has been nominated by Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) to the 12th District Military Service Academy.

Scott A. Long has accepted his appointment to a military service academy and will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy for the fall of 2017.

During his high school career at Cox Mill, he was a member of the men’s swim team, a volunteer for the Special Olympics and an AP class peer mentor.

 

Other students nominated were:

Manley Xavier James, a graduate of Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Throughout high school James was the JROTC Raiders Team Captain, founder of the Young Politicians Society, a member of the National Spanish Honor Society and an Eagle Scout.

Alexander Gerard Pena Ponce, a graduate of Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, will be attending the U.S. Air Force Academy. Throughout high school Ponce was a member of the National Honors Society, a volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank, senior captain of the track and field team and student council media committee chair.

Daniel C. Alperi, graduate of at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, will be attending the U.S. Air Force Academy. Alperi was a member of the basketball team and an AP student.

Trace Cole Dowell, a graduate of West Davidson High School in Lexington, will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. Dowell is a valedictorian, student body president, a varsity cross-country swimmer and has achieved 14.3 hours of flight instruction toward his pilot’s license.

Andrew James Todd, a graduate of Ledford High School in Thomasville, will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Todd is a member of the Debate and Beta clubs, a National Honor Society member, a patrol leader for the Boy Scouts of America and track and field athlete.

Joseph Popek, a graduate of Ragsdale High School in Greensboro, will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Popek was all-state in the indoor pole vault, a member of the National Honors Society, and a recipient of the 2016 ROTC scholarship.
