Congresswoman A Consistent Champion for Black Land Grants Through Farm Bill and Other Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C.
(September 25, 2023) Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) was honored by the 1890 Universities Foundation with its inaugural Congressional Champion award for her advocacy and commitment to the 1890 land grant universities, including North Carolina A&T State University, of which she is an alumna.

“1890 Land-Grant Universities, like all Historically Black Colleges and Universities, have opened doors of opportunity for millions of students,” said Congresswoman Adams, a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee and a founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. “These institutions are more than universities: they're the cornerstones of communities both urban and rural. As a proud 1890s graduate, I am honored to receive this recognition and to continue fighting for investment in these institutions so that they can continue to create opportunity and prepare future leaders in North Carolina and around the country.”

This session, her leadership on 1890s issues includes leading the ENABLE Opportunity Act and the Land-Grant Research Equity and Accountability Act, and co-sponsorship of Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Congressman David Scott’s bill providing additional funding for scholarships for students at 1890 institutions. She also introduced her annual recognition of the anniversary of the 1890s in August.

Previously, she has led a House Agriculture Subcommittee meeting on the state of 1890 Land Grant Universities, secured resources for six new 1890 Centers of Excellence in the 2018 Farm Bill, and secured resources to support and supplement agricultural research, education, and extension for 1890s in the Inflation Reduction Act through efforts such as USDA’s NextGen Program.

Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. represents North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District (Charlotte, Mecklenburg Country) and serves as a Senior Member of the House Committee on Agriculture, the committee of jurisdiction for the Morrill Acts. Additionally, she serves on the House Committee on Education & the Workforce, where she serves as Ranking Member of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In 2015, Rep. Adams co-founded the first Bipartisan HBCU Caucus in Congress. Her alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University, is the largest of the 1890s institutions.
