Adams and Cummings Lead Letter Requesting Oversight and Government Reform Hearing on Federal Workforce Diversity
Washington, D.C.— Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) and House Oversight and Government Reform (OGR) Committee Ranking Member Rep. Elijah Cummings (MD-07) co-led a letter along with twenty-five Members of Congress requesting Committee Chairman Gowdy convene a hearing to examine the Trump Administration’s poor record on diversity in the federal workforce.
"As our nation and workforce continues to diversify, the federal government should be a leader in recognizing, hiring, and retaining diverse talent,” said Congresswoman Adams. “Instead, Trump Administration officials have chosen to not only deemphasize diversity and inclusion in appointments and hires, but to be actively hostile to the mere idea of diversity and inclusion in our workforce.”
“The current trends in this administration's hiring policies indicate a desire to prioritize white men above all others - a likely contributing factor to the recent hate-based practices that have shook our nation to its core,” Rep. Adams continued. “I will continue to lead efforts that challenge this administration's abominable record for hiring talent of diverse backgrounds, and I strongly encourage Chairman Gowdy to consider the impact that these policies will have on working families, communities of color, and other groups who have been historically marginalized by unchecked discrimination in hiring."
“It is troubling to see the Trump Administration moving in the wrong direction on diversity as our country is becoming more and more diverse every day,” said Rep. Cummings. “A hearing is necessary to examine President Trump’s rollback of diversity and inclusiveness policies, and I hope that Chairman Gowdy understands the potential negative impact going backwards on these policies may have for all Americans.”
