Adams, Brat Granted GAO Request to Investigate SBA Support for HBCU Entrepreneurs

March 28, 2018

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC) and Congressman Dave Brat (R-VA), members of the Small Business Committee, announced that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has granted their request to investigate whether Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are receiving adequate support from the Small Business Administration (SBA) to help develop successful entrepreneurs. Last month, the pair sent a letter to U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro requesting that the GAO review: SBA outreach procedures, the number of SBA research partners associated with HBCUs and the services they provide, SBA outreach to HBCUs specifically, and the benefits this outreach has yielded thus far.

"Last month, Rep. Brat and I sent a letter requesting an investigation into the SBA's support for HBCUs and today, I'm pleased to announce that the Government Accountability Office has accepted our request for review," said Congresswoman Adams. "HBCUs train a large number of African American entrepreneurs and I'm committed to ensuring they have the support and tools needed to succeed in today's economy. Small businesses are the employers of the future and we must ensure they have equitable access to training and resources. I look forward to reviewing the report upon completion."

"I am pleased the Government Accountability Office accepted our request," said Congressman Brat. "There are five Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Virginia, and I would like to ensure they receive the resources they need to develop successful entrepreneurs. I look forward to learning the results."
