Adams Condemns Alexander's Refusal to Pass FUTURE Act

September 27, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D., (NC-12) released the following statement on the Senate's refusal to pass the FUTURE Act.

"The FUTURE Act is bipartisan. It passed the House with broad support and has strong support in the Senate. It is shocking and illogical that Senator Alexander has refused to do his job and pass this vital legislation, critical for the success of HBCUs and students of color," said Congresswoman Adams. "Chairman Alexander has not only turned his back on our nation's 102 HBCUs, but he's slammed doors on the more than 300,000 students they serve. This is devastating, especially for the 6 undergraduate HBCUs in Tennessee, the state he represents. I encourage my colleague to do the right thing and pass the FUTURE Act."

"The FUTURE Act is vital to HBCUs, especially for an institution such as Tennessee State University (TSU)", Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, President of TSU added. TSU relies on this funding to help prepare thousands of students, many of whom are Tennesseans. The sunsetting of Title III, Part F is a serious blow to TSU, to our students, and to all HBCUs nationwide. I will continue to work with Senator Alexander to address his concerns and ask him to reconsider and lead the Senate in passing the FUTURE Act."

The FUTURE Act reauthorizes $255 million in critical funding for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) for the next two years, including $85 million for HBCUs. This legislation provides HBCUs, Tribal Colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and others funding to strengthen STEM programs, improve infrastructure and equip campuses with the technology they need to prepare students for 21st century jobs.
