Adams, HBCU Caucus Host 4th Annual Diversity in Tech Summit

June 16, 2021

The annual Summit brings together private sector, government, and education leaders to address and ultimately improve the representation of Black Americans and people of color, including women of color, in the tech sector.

Washington, D.C. – Today, the fourth annual Diversity in Tech Summit was hosted by the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus and Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC-12) founder and co-chair of the caucus.

The annual Summit brings together private sector, government, and education leaders to address and ultimately improve the representation of Black Americans and people of color, including women of color, in the tech sector. This year's summit comes in advance of the Juneteenth weekend, as a reminder of the legacy of slavery that led to the need for HBCUs, and in recognition of the equity issues HBCUs continue to face.

The presenting partner for the summit is Truist. The summit was anchored by apanel on broadband at HBCUs featuring Federal Communications Commission Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. Video from the panel is available here.

"On Wednesday, 62 private partners, HBCU leaders and Members of Congress convened to discuss the importance of HBCUs to creating a skilled workforce that looks like America," said Congresswoman Adams. "HBCU students, faculty, staff and their communities have been particularly hard hit over the past year, so this discussion couldn't come at a more important time. I applaud all of our private partners for working with us to create 21st century opportunity for the institutions and students who need our help the most, and for committing to diverse workforces in every sector."

Additionally, prior to the summit, the HBCU Caucus announced that HP, Lincoln Financial Group, and Micron are joining the HBCU Partnership Challenge. The HBCU Partnership Challenge is an effort to promote greater engagement and support between private companies and HBCUs. The Challenge encourages participating organizations to make greater investments in HBCUs. For more information, please contact John Christie (john.christie@mail.house.gov).
