February 15, 2019

Washington DC- Today, Rep Adams (NC-12) will be honored by Governor Cooper and First Lady Kristin Cooper for her advocacy for the arts. The honor will be in celebration of Black History Month as the Governor and First Lady will be celebrating African American musicians and artists from North Carolina.

"African American artists have made significant and lasting contributions to our nation's vibrant tapestry. Art and culture have had a tremendous impact on my life," said Congresswoman Adams. "During my time in school, as a student and as a professor, I witnessed firsthand the value of an arts and humanities education. That is why I have made arts advocacy a top priority in Congress. It is an honor to be recognized in the company of so many talented North Carolinians. Congratulations to all of the honorees and thank you to Governor Cooper for acknowledging the importance of the arts."

"From the classroom to Congress, Representative Alma Adams has tirelessly served North Carolina throughout her life," said Governor Roy Cooper. "Today as part of North Carolina's observance of Black History Month, we honor notable African Americans who have made their mark through the arts, such as Representative Adams for her arts advocacy including 40 years as an arts educator at Bennett College."

Congresswoman Adams is a practicing artist, specializing in printmaking. She is also the co-founder of the African American Atelier Art Gallery, which recently celebrated its 28th anniversary. She is also a proud member of the Congressional Arts Caucus and the Congressional Humanities Caucus.
