Adams Leads Letter Calling on the Senate to Extend Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) Benefits for Students

June 17, 2020

"It is crucial that we immediately extend P-EBT Benefits to help families that are struggling to put food on their tables during this pandemic."

Washington, D.C. - This week, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) led a letter calling on the leaders of the United States Senate to extend Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) benefits for school children. Adams is joined on the letter by Representatives G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) and David Price (NC-04).

The need to extend benefits is urgent as North Carolina's school year ended June 12.

"Across the country, P-EBT is providing resources to families who have lost access to free or reduced- price school meals due to school closures. In North Carolina, almost 900,000 children are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch. Thanks to P-EBT, their families have received more than $300 million to help them put food on their tables during the pandemic. Unfortunately, this crucial assistance is winding down. Currently, states are not authorized to provide P-EBT benefits beyond the end of this school year. In North Carolina, the school year ends on Friday, June 12th," wrote Congresswoman Adams.

A copy of the letter is available here.

Congresswoman Alma Adams has championed food security issues during COVID-19, most recently with the FEED the Children Act that was included in the HEROES Act, which passed the House in May. She serves on the House Committee on Education and Labor, the committee of jurisdiction for P-EBT.

Congresswoman Alma Adams represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District (Charlotte) and serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture. Additionally, she serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the House Education & Labor Committee, where she serves as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In 2015, she founded the Adams Hunger Initiative to address food insecurity across Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the 12th Congressional District.
