Adams' Statement on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Bill

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) issued the following statement on the passage of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Check Bill. The bill requires universal background checks on all gun sales, including those sold at gun shows, online and by private vendors.

"After years of Republicans refusing to take action on meaningful gun control legislation, the House has finally taken steps to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country. As a staunch supporter of gun safety reform, I was proud to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation. Gun control is not a partisan issue—it is a commonsense issue, and universal background checks are a commonsense solution. Gun violence claims the lives of thousands of Americans every year, including 47 homicides by gun in Charlotte last year. Universal background checks will keep guns away from dangerous individuals, making our communities safer for everyone."
