Adams Statement on Supreme Court Abortion Drug Ruling

April 14, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 14, 2023) – Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement in response to today’s stay by the U. S. Supreme Court in the lower court case that would have reversed FDA approval of Mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortion:

“Mifepristone, also known as the abortion pill, has been safely used for medication abortion for over 20 years. Today’s ruling means mifepristone is still legal and accessible,” said Adams. The Supreme Court’s stay recognizes that the lower court decision recklessly denies a form of care that has been FDA approved since the year 2000. Mifepristone is also used to safely manage miscarriages; the original rulingwould compound the pain of those losses by denying women care and put women’s lives at risk.

“While Mifepristone is still legal for now, the lower court’s ruling would set a terrible precedent if affirmed by the Supreme Court. Abortion is health care, and health care decisions should be between a person and their doctor, not the courts or Congress.”
