Adams Statement on Texas Abortion Ban

September 1, 2021

Without emergency action from the Supreme Court to block S.B. 8, abortion is now nearly impossible for patients to access in Texas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement in response to the Texas abortion ban (S.B. 8):

"No state has banned abortion at six weeks since Roe v. Wade. By allowing Texas' abortion ban to become law, the Supreme Court of the United States has effectively signaled that Roe should no longer be considered the law of the land," said Congresswoman Alma Adams. "The Court's inaction means that women will be treated as second-class citizens, incapable of making their own choices. Despite the Court's failure to address and acknowledge the devastating impacts that such a ban will have on women, particularly women of color, I will continue to work in Congress to protect a woman's right to choose, her ability to access care, and her fundamental equality and dignity."

According to Dr. Sarah Horvath, a family planning fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, "Unless a woman is actively trying to get pregnant, she is unlikely to know that she is pregnant at six weeks." Without emergency action from the Supreme Court to block S.B. 8, abortion is now nearly impossible for patients to access in Texas.
