Adams Warns of National Security Concerns Following Trump’s Decertification of the Iran Deal

October 13, 2017

Charlotte, N.C.—Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) released the following statement after President Trump declined to recertify Iran's compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"The Iran deal isn't perfect but this multinational agreement has weakened Iran's nuclear program," said Congresswoman Adams. "The international community supports it and twice since taking office President Trump has recertified the deal. Today, without any definitive evidence of Iranian violations, the President haphazardly decertified it. This is a political stunt that endangers our national security, threatens our international relationships, and emboldens our aggressors. In the void of true leadership from this President, Congress must once again stand up and fix this error."

Announced in July of 2015, the JCPOA is an international agreement negotiated by the "P5+1" (United States, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and Germany), the European Union, and Iran that sought to cut off Iran's path to nuclear weapons capability.

Under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA) the President is required to re-certify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA every three months. INARA also requires the President to provide Congress with credible evidence of Iranian noncompliance, should violations of the JCPOA occur. No such evidence has been provided to Congress to-date, and the International Atomic Energy Agency, U.S. military and intelligence officials, and U.S. allies have indicated that Iran remains in technical compliance with the agreement.

Last week Rep. Adams joined 179 Members of Congress to send a letter to President Trump urging him to recertify Iran's compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
