Congresswoman Adams Co-Sponsors EACH Woman Act
New Legislation Ensures Healthcare Coverage for All Women; Lifts Abortion Restrictions
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) joined Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and more than 50 Members of Congress, in co-sponsoring the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act. The EACH Woman Act ensures health coverage for abortion for every woman; regardless of income, insurance or residence.
"Every woman deserves access to all forms of safe and affordable healthcare," said Congresswoman Adams. "The decision to have an abortion should be solely up to a woman; and by placing restrictions on women with lower incomes and certain insurance, we are limiting their right to choose. I stand behind the EACH Woman Act because I believe every woman should have the right to choose and have access to affordable healthcare."
The EACH Woman Act would allow every woman with insurance through the federal government to be covered for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion. It would prohibit political interference with decisions of private health insurance companies to offer coverage for abortion care; and stop federal, state and local legislators from interfering with the private insurance market to prevent insurance companies from providing abortion coverage. This legislation would also lift the restriction on abortion coverage for women enrolled in Medicaid, commonly called the Hyde Amendment.
