Congresswoman Adams Co-Sponsors First Bill of the 114th Congress, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Historic Preservation Program

January 14, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC— Yesterday Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) co-sponsored her first bill with Assistant Democratic Leader, James Clyburn, and other Members of the Congressional Black Caucus to introduce H.R. 295, to reauthorize the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Historic Preservation Program. Rep. Adams is an original co-sponsor on H.R. 295 and made the following statement regarding her support of this important legislation:

"As a professor at Bennett College (an HBCU) for 40 years, I know the importance and great impact that HBCUs have on the young people in our community. That is why I wanted the first piece of legislation I co-sponsored in the 114th Congress to reflect my focus on doing all I can to improve and preserve our HBCUs. This bill addresses the need to preserve and protect threatened historic buildings and sites on HBCU campuses nationwide. This directly affects the 5 HBCUs that I represent in the 12th congressional district. Since 1996, 59 institutions in 20 different states have received grants to renovate and preserve irreplaceable historic structures. Most recently, Bennett College received a grant to restore the historic Ethel Black Hall. The preservation of these historic structures on HBCU campuses are paramount in the success of these great institutions. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of aisle in to preserve and support our HBCUs."
