Congresswoman Adams, Mayor Roberts and Councilwoman Mayfield Discuss Economic Growth in North Carolina

August 26, 2016

CHARLOTTE — Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) continued her Made in the 12th District Tour with Mayor Jennifer Roberts and Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield by hosting a roundtable with local manufacturers. The roundtable brought together employers and workforce development trainers to discuss issues impacting the manufacturing sector-which is one of North Carolina’s largest industries.

Participating companies included Siemens Energy, Inc., Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., Bosch Rexroth, Charlotte Works, and participants from Central Piedmont Community College.

“Today’s roundtable was a crucial first step in bringing together key stakeholders to address the skills gap that’s affecting the manufacturing industry,” said Congresswoman Adams. “Advanced manufacturing is now a leading industry in the state, that is why my top priority is ensuring that local manufactures are able to continue growing and offering good paying jobs and that our people are trained to fill.”

“I am grateful that Congresswoman Adams is committed to helping Charlotte workers prepare for jobs in the 21st Century. I look forward to working with her to bring more manufacturing jobs to Charlotte and to bridge the skills gap with our youth as we continue to spread opportunity to every corner of our city,” said Mayor Roberts.

“It was an honor to serve alongside this prestige panel round-table which shows our continued commitment to having an advanced economy that’s invested in having the most capable individuals that will be prepared to take on the jobs of tomorrow,” said Councilwoman Mayfield.

Manufacturing jobs account for only 10 percent of the number of jobs in North Carolina, however, nationwide 83 percent of manufacturers report a shortage of skilled laborers to fill current job openings. Working together, we can better train workers to fill jobs that are currently available in advanced manufacturing. This will strengthen American manufacturing and continue to move our economy forward.

The Made in the 12th District Tour has given Congresswoman Adams an opportunity to listen to employers and job seekers throughout the entire District.
