Congresswoman Adams Opposes Efforts to Undermine Public Education

February 8, 2017

Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement in opposition to H.J. Res. 57 and H.J. Res 58 which would undermine public education.

"Republicans put politics before America's 50 million public school students," said Congresswoman Adams. "First, Republicans confirm a Secretary of Education who is unfamiliar with and unwilling to enforce key civil rights protections for students. Now, Congressional Republicans are dismantling the oversight authority of the Department of Education.

"The Congressional Review Act has only been used once before in Congress' history. Using it to decrease transparency and lower teacher preparation program standards is a disservice to students. The ‘Every Student Succeeds Act' passed Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support and this action strips it of some of its most crucial civil rights safeguards and guidance for states. I voted against this political gimmick and will continue to oppose any legislation that decreases the quality of education our students receive."
