Congresswoman Adams Statement on the Confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education

February 7, 2017

Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement after Vice President Mike Pence voted to break the 50-50 tie in the Senate to confirm Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education.

"DeVos' confirmation is disappointing," said Congresswoman Adams. "Her lack of qualifications and understanding of federal education policy has caused unprecedented national outcry. We have stricter requirements for our school teachers than we did for DeVos to become Secretary of Education.

"Her disapproval crossed party lines. Vice President Pence had to cast a historic tie-breaking vote to secure her confirmation after multiple Republican Senators refused to support her. As your representative and as a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, I will continue to hold DeVos and the Department of Education accountable because the future of our nation depends upon the success of our public education."
