Congresswoman Adams Statement on General Assembly Passage of Anti-LGBT Discrimination Law

March 23, 2016

Charlotte, NC – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) today released the following statement:

“I am disappointed and ashamed by the actions of the state legislature. Today’s special session was a power grab by State Republicans to legalize discrimination, wasting taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars.

“America was founded, in part, on the idea that everyone should be treated equally and able to live their lives free from the fear of discrimination. Through generations, many have fought and died for that right. The recent anti-discrimination ordinance passed last month by the Charlotte City Council exemplifies these core American values. Discrimination has no place in our communities or our laws. It is shameful that Governor McCrory has led this effort to strip equal protection rights from a marginalized community.

“No American should ever live in fear because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I stand with Charlotte and the LGBT community in the continued fight for equality in our state.”
