Congresswoman Adams Statement on the Passing of Aretha Franklin: Long Live the “Queen”

August 16, 2018

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. made the following statement on the death of musical icon and legend, Aretha Franklin:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of an American musical icon, international entertainment legend, and the ‘Queen of Soul'- Aretha Franklin. I vividly remember hearing her powerful voice over the airwaves during a time when our nation was extremely divided; however, her music was able to crossover and bring people from different backgrounds together. From the iconic Songs of Faith to her final production and 42nd album, A Brand New Me, her musical genius has stood the test of time and her accomplishments are unmatched.

I have always valued the longevity of an artist's creations. Through art, we can lookback through history to learn about the great societies, civilizations, and people who have shaped humanity. I know that when the history books reflect on this period, Aretha Franklin's music and impact will be listed among the few names of those whose work has transcended race, gender, class, orientation, and nationality. Her voice and influence will continue to shape artistry for years to come – long live the Queen."
