CHARLOTTE (January 26, 2024) - Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. hosted her annual State of the District address yesterday, (January 25), delivering it in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties to gathered constituents. The address was met with enthusiasm and prompted robust question and answer segments.

Rep. Adams highlighted her many legislative achievements both as a legislative lead and in support of a historically accomplished Democratic Majority, reinforcing the importance of increased wages for the working class. “We should not have a minimum wage, we should have a living wage,” Adams said.

She also cited major community investments coming to fruition from the American Rescue Plan, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. These include a new research program for pancreatic cancer at UNC Charlotte and Eli Lilly’s new manufacturing facility in Concord, both in the 12th Congressional district. Rep. Adams also spoke of her successful efforts to push the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to increase SNAP Benefits, her successful securing of millions of dollars for district programs, and her legislative victories for infrastructure and staff on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

With her party now in the legislative minority, Rep. Adams also laid out her ongoing fight to protect and promote access to programs targeting her four Hs: hunger, housing, healthcare, higher education.

Congresswoman Adams took submitted questions from constituents, addressing issues of concern to voters covering healthcare, housing, immigration, gun violence, democracy, gerrymandering, wars abroad, and her personal conviction to continue her duties. On health, hunger, and gun violence, Rep. Adams said, “...these issues should not be partisan because our children are not partisan,” emphasizing that guns were the number one killer of American children.

Both deliveries of Rep. Adams’ State of the District address will soon be available on her website, adams.house.gov. Transcripts of the speech have been shared with the media and are available on request.

If constituents have questions, they are encouraged to contact the Congresswoman’s District Office by phone at (704) 344-9950.
