Congresswoman Alma Adams Statement on the Impact of the Government Shutdown

January 9, 2019

Washington, D.C- As the government shutdown nears day 19, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement on the impact of the government shutdown.

"Last night, President Trump misused his first prime-time Oval Office address to instill fear in the hearts of Americans about the manufactured "crisis" on our Southern border. Instead of offering new ideas or policy solutions, Trump repeated the same talking points devoid of facts. As the government approaches the longest shutdown in American history -- due to the President's inability to govern -- the real crisis is being felt right here at home. Millions of North Carolinians are at risk of being unable to put food on their tables and keep roofs over their heads," said Congresswoman Adams. "Furthermore, North Carolinians are still putting their lives back together after Hurricanes Florence and Matthew, and Trump's antics are holding up more than a billion dollars of federal recovery funding that could help provide relief. Moreover, our national airspace's safety, efficiency, and security is at risk at airports across the country as our dedicated air traffic controllers, law enforcement, and TSA officers are stretched thin, low on morale, and working without pay. It is time the President and my GOP colleagues separate the shutdown from a thoughtful discussion on border security. Our nation is suffering, Mr. President. Let's put the American people first, and end this shutdown once and for all."
