Congresswoman Alma S. Adams Statement on Whole Women’s Health vs. Hellerstedt

June 27, 2016

Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (D-NC) issued the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision in Whole Women’s Health vs. Hellerstedt, which struck down some of our countries most restrictive anti-abortion laws to date.

“The Supreme Court’s decision in Whole Women’s Health vs. Hellerstedt is a victory for women nationwide. Every woman has a right to a safe and legal abortion and the politically motivated Texas law that governed these procedures endangered those rights. Earlier this year, Republicans carried out a witch hunt in Congress in an attempt to smear the name of Planned Parenthood and further restrict women’s options to secure safe and legal abortions. Texas House Bill 2 was a similar attempt to politicize women’s health and I support the Supreme Court’s decision to strike it down. Our fight is far from over, but it is my hope that this ruling will cause pause in extremist lawmakers from other states that were considering similar legislation to restrict women’s healthcare and will continue to further the national discussion surrounding women’s healthcare.”
