Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Stakeholders Take Stock of 2023 and Anticipate, Organize For Year Ahead

CHARLOTTE (Monday, December 18, 2023) – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) this morning hosted the Fourth Quarter Adams Hunger Initiative meeting, engaging with stakeholders on key food and agriculture policy issues, focusing on ensuring food security for all. Rep. Adams regularly convenes this “kitchen cabinet” with the goal of ending the “chronic crisis of hunger.”

“Both the end of the year and the holiday season prompt us to consider the blessings that we have to be grateful for – not least given how central food is to celebrating during this holiday season,” said Rep. Adams. “But it also casts into clear focus how fair access to food in this country and, indeed, in the district, has become a privilege, and that is shameful.”

Rep. Adams highlighted the Initiative’s successes of the past year, including hosting Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02) this past June, whose tireless efforts have been pivotal to reducing hunger in America, calling him a “a true anti-hunger hero in the House.” She also stressed the need to defend programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), critical to feeding families, from proposed cuts and lapses in funding.

The event included a focus on Rep. Adams’ Farm Bill proposals which include addressing hunger, promoting equality in funding of land-grant HBCUs, support for Black farmers and other farmers of color, and urban agriculture.

“You can’t be healthy if you’re hungry,” Rep. Adams emphasized.
