Rep. Adams’ Statement on House Passage of the FUTURE Act

December 12, 2019

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved her bill H.R. 5363, the FUTURE Act, by a vote of 319 to 96,

"After all of our hard work and determination, I am ecstatic that we were able to come to an agreement to permanently reauthorize crucial mandatory funding for our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs)", said Congresswoman Adams.

"HBCUs and MSIs provide pathways of opportunities for millions of Americans who come from low-income families. As a two-time graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, and a retired professor of 40 years at Bennett College for Women, I as well as all the pupils that I had the pleasure of teaching, are a testament to the power of these schools which mold their students into the leaders of tomorrow."

"This agreement will secure $255 million a year for these institutions to serve over eight million students of color, preparing them for careers in our STEM professions. I ask the Senate to take up this bill immediately and pass it without delay, so our HBCUs and MSIs can continue their legacy of educating students of color."
