Rep. Alma Adams Statement on Biden Stimulus Proposal

January 21, 2021

While the plan also makes good on the promise of a combined $2,000 in new stimulus payments, I would encourage Congress and the Administration to pass recurring payments. For many American families, these aren’t just stimulus checks – they’re survival checks.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following remarks on President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus proposal:

"I applaud President Biden's proposal to help the United States recover from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It combats COVID-19 and its long-term impacts on our nation directly with an investment in a national vaccine program to end the pandemic once and for all. The proposal contains a $400/week supplement to unemployment insurance, and it would finally raise the minimum wage for our essential workers and everyone else who can't survive on seven twenty-five. It would help our schools reopen by giving them the resources to make our classrooms safe for students and educators, and it would provide critical assistance for struggling small businesses and our states, cities, and towns that are facing budget shortfalls.

"While the plan also makes good on the promise of a combined $2,000 in new stimulus payments, I would encourage Congress and the Administration to pass recurring payments. For many American families, these aren't just stimulus checks – they're survival checks. Finally, since student debt relief is not a part of the proposal, I encourage the Biden-Harris Administration to act swiftly to provide debt relief through their executive authority."
