Rep. Alma Adams Statement on the Inauguration

January 20, 2021

"President Joe Biden is the right person for this moment."

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following remarks celebrating the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris:

"Inauguration Day is a time for celebration, but this transition of power is a different kind of moment for many Americans. Though we are hopeful thanks to the promise of a Biden-Harris Administration, we can't look away from the events of the past four years, the over 400,000 Americans who have been lost to COVID-19, or the tragic events at the Capitol this month. This time in our history is both sweet and sour."

"However, that is also why President Joe Biden is the right person for this moment. When he was a young father celebrating his election to the Senate, he lost his wife and daughter in a tragic car crash. When he was making history as Vice President, he lost his beloved son Beau to cancer. President Biden knows this kind of moment all too well, and he knows how important it is to get up and keep going. That's the kind of President he's going to be – someone who can face adversity head-on, and make sure that we as a people and we as a country come back stronger than ever before."

"Furthermore, President Biden chose the right partner for this moment: our Vice President, Kamala Harris. Vice President Harris is a role model for young women and women of color everywhere. She has been my trusted partner in Congress on issues ranging from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the Black maternal health crisis, and she has been an inspiration to all women working to break that final glass ceiling. I have cried many tears of joy for my sister and my Soror, and I can't wait to see what Vice President Harris will accomplish with President Biden to build the United States back better."
