Statement by Congresswoman Alma Adams on Opposing a Witch Hunt of American Educators
WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 13, 2023) - Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement on her opposition to H. Res. 927:
“As a Black woman who attended college in the segregated South, I abhor hate of all kinds. Since the brutal terrorist attack in Israel on October 7th, we have seen an unprecedented rise in antisemitism across the country and on our college campuses.
Time after time over the past two months, I have joined bipartisan condemnations of this insidious movement with my votes in this chamber and my comments in committee hearings, on the multiple bills brought on the matter. I have continued to support the State of Israel with my voice and my votes.
We need to do more to protect our students and ensure their physical safety as well as their free speech rights. But instead of finding solutions, my colleagues across the aisle want to harness this surge of hatred and turn it into a witch hunt against three college presidents.
These leaders were selected by their respective Boards to lead their institutions, and they have their own processes at work to address these problems. Is Congress seeking to set a precedent for controlling who will lead our educational institutions? Are we trying to replace the role of the Boards of Trustees too?
Having experienced racism myself, I am not interested in playing games. Let’s get back to work that matters, and start talking about how to actually protect our students.”
