Statement by Congresswoman Alma Adams on the passing of Retired Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

January 2, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 2, 2024) – Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement on the passing of Retired Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson:

“I was deeply saddened to hear we would begin the New Year without my beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sister, friend, and colleague Eddie Bernice Johnson, affectionately known as EBJ. She was a trusted, extraordinary member of Congress – highly revered, wise, and supportive of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) before and after my arrival, paving the way for the bi-partisan work we do today in the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional HBCU Caucus.

There is much to be said about someone who invests three decades of their life to serve the people. That is a level of commitment that goes beyond politics, beyond party, and beyond rhetoric. Her unending commitment to creating equity in education, particularly STEM, and her leadership in creating opportunities for people of color will benefit American families for generations to come. EBJ’s legacy will live on in the groundbreaking legislation - like the CHIPS and Science Act - that she introduced and co-sponsored that became law during her tenure.

My condolences to her family, friends, constituents, and loved ones during this time of bereavement. May her example be a reminder to all of us that we can effect change in our community despite the obstacles that may stand in our way.”
