Workforce Protections Chair Adams Condemns Gosar’s Inappropriate Workplace Conduct
Rep. Gosar’s violent, disrespectful tweet would be considered grounds for termination at workplaces across the United States.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12), Chair of the House Education & Labor Committee Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, voted to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) for producing an animated video depicting the assassination of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Gosar's violent, disrespectful tweet would be considered grounds for termination at workplaces across the United States.
"The United States Congress is a workplace, and we are sent here to do the people's work," said Congresswoman Adams. "Mr. Gosar's actions would get him reprimanded and possibly terminated at any Fortune 500 company, so why should Congress be any different? No one should experience harassment or threats in their workplace, so it would be hypocritical for the House to condone harassments and threats from one member to another. After the attacks on January 6, which terrorized our Capitol Police, Congressional staff, and us Members as well, Mr. Gosar's actions are even more unconscionable. My subcommittee can't ensure a safe work environment for all Americans if we don't address workplace harassment in our own House."
"Finally, I want to extend my deepest admiration and appreciation to my colleague, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez. She's been harassed and threatened by her coworkers: other Members of Congress. Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez has demonstrated admirable resolve and composure in the face of childish antics from her peers, but she shouldn't have to. If you harass or abuse a fellow legislator, you don't belong in the people's House. Period," concluded Adams.
Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District (Charlotte, Mecklenburg County) and serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture, as well as the Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Congressional HBCU Caucus and the Black Maternal Health Caucus. Additionally, she serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the House Education & Labor Committee, where she serves as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee.
