CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith University and other local colleges are millions of dollars in debt to the federal government, according to a new report that says the problem is affecting many historically black colleges.
Many of the colleges were banking on their enrollment going up over time, which would have increased revenue and their ability to pay off federal loans, but that hasn't been the case.
As congressional Republicans try to pass an unpopular plan that would roll back the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and cause an estimated 22 million Americans to lose their health insurance, a House bill to expand the publicly-funded Medicare program from just senior citizens to every American is picking up record support -- and not just amon
WASHINGTON, D.C. Senate Republican leaders released on Thursday a revised plan to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but it drew criticism from senators on both sides of the political divide within the Republican party, indicating a treacherous path for the bill. The bill played to the party's disparate factions by letting insurers sell cheap, bare-bones policies while retaining taxes on the wealthy. But the immediate outcry illustrated the difficult political terrain that U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) must navigate.

Noting that the NC Republican legislative leadership is "dragging their feet" about doing anything that would fairly represent voters when it comes to redistricting, Congresswoman Alma Adams says they frankly "don't give a damn about these citizens."
"They see it as a disadvantage to themselves; they won't do it," Adams (D-NC-13) said in a telephone interview recently, referring to redrawing legislative voting districts in time for a special election this year.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Hundreds of Charlotteans, along with many local leaders, celebrated America's birthday Tuesday morning in east Charlotte during the 49th annual Hickory Grove parade.

If the Senate health care plan becomes law, no state's residents would fare worse than North Carolina, according to a new study on the proposed bill.
That includes 1.3 million people in North Carolina, according to a new study – the fourth-most in the nation, and the highest percentage of people losing coverage in any state.
Democrats were quick to jump on the news.
As it turns out, scripture has a lot more to say about money than it does about sex, though based on our sex-fixated society, who knew? In fact, scripture covers nearly every angle about money: how to make money, save money, spend money, and most importantly, lend money. Lending money seems to be of particular concern to God because this is the place where the powerful can readily take advantage of the vulnerable, and the vulnerable always have a special place in God's heart.
