More on Congressional Issues
Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) attended the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting today to express her strong opposition to the confirmation of Thomas Farr to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Prior to today's meeting, the Congressional Black Caucus sent a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein strongly opposing the nomination.
Washington, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) announced she will return to work this week following a doctor-mandated absence while she is still recovering from surgery. Adams was given strict orders to reduce her workload and limit activity until she is fully released by her doctor.
"Thank you for your support and well wishes during my recovery," said Congresswoman Adams. "I look forward to returning to Capitol Hill this week to continue working on behalf of the people of the 12th District."
Washington, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement in response to President Trump's racist comments about Africa:
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement regarding the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina ruling on North Carolina's Congressional district map:
Despite the fact that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) provide sound educational opportunities to promising students, smaller endowments, lower levels of federal investment, and fewer alumni giving have created a funding deficit across many of these institutions.
North Carolina's 13 congressional districts are headed for redrawing.
A panel of federal judges struck down the state's 2016 district lines as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander and ordered the General Assembly to fix them by Jan. 29. The court also plans to employ a special master to draw an alternative remedial plan, to be enacted before the 2018 congressional elections.
U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), David Perdue (R-GA), and Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced the HBCU Capital Financing Improvement Act (S.2268), a bill which will help improve the financial health of some of our country's most critical higher education institutions.
Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) introduced the companion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives last year. Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) are original cosponsors of the Senate bill.
There is a sense among many presidents at historically black colleges and universities that the Trump Administration, while not overly friendly to HBCUs by initiative or policy, has been a salve against what many expected would happen in a fury of budget cuts and racism-driven reforms.
Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) released the following statement after House Republicans voted to pass the conference report for H.R. 1, the GOP Tax Scam:
Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) released the following statement ahead of the vote on the GOP Tax Scam conference report today:
"This tax scam is a nightmare for Mecklenburg families and I will not support it," said Congresswoman Adams. "It raises taxes on 86 million hardworking Americans, endangers state and local budgets, explodes the deficit, gives 83% of the tax cut to the wealthiest 1% and corporations, strips 13 million Americans of their healthcare, and ransacks Medicare to pay for it. It's a sham."
