Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams' (NC-12) legislation to name a Winston-Salem post office after Dr. Maya Angelou, passed out of the House Oversight and Government Reform committee by unanimous consent. The legislation, H.R. 3735, would rename the Center City post office located at 200 Town Run Lane in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to that of the Maya Angelou Memorial Post Office.

Adams (NC-12), a member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee today released the following statement after the Every Student Succeeds Act – legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replace the No Child Left Behind Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 359 to 64:
Washington, DC – U.S. Reps. Alma S. Adams (NC-12), Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) and Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) today applauded a new provision of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which will help prevent dating and relationship violence. The provision, included in the bill at the urging of the members, is part of a grant program to promote safe and healthy students.

Adams (NC-12) today voted with 358 of her Democratic and Republican colleagues in the House to adopt the conference report that reauthorizes highway, bridge, transportation safety, and public transit projects for the next five years. The measure provides $281 billion in guaranteed funding for these programs over these five years. The measure also reauthorizes the critically important Export-Import Bank for four years, which helps American workers and businesses compete in the global economy.
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) today announced she is accepting entries for the Congressional App Challenge. Established in 2013, the Congressional App Challenge is a national competition that allows high school students from across the county to create and exhibit their software application, or "app" for mobile, tablet or computer devices. The competition is meant to encourage student engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

Adams (NC-12) joined a bicameral group of Members in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez to encourage the Employee Benefits Security Administration to issue guidance on innovations to help workers retain retirement savings between jobs. When workers change jobs, many choose to cash out their retirement savings and start over with a new savings plan at their new job.

"Since 1965, the Higher Education Act has helped level the playing field for millions of students across our nation. As the largest authorized federal source of funding for student aid, this legislation has helped make college more accessible and more affordable.
